Most experts agree that children’s wardrobe should have the following characteristics: good ventilation, the ability to absorb moisture, and not cause allergies. To simplify this task for parents, we have prepared an overview of the most suitable fabrics for children’s clothing. For a new-born, extra consideration should be taken into account such as the fabric should be comfortable against the cut umbilical cord. For older babies and kids, comfort and safety rank as the prime consideration. You also do not want the fabric to be clingy or slippery or thick – the fabric has to be breathable. The fabric also has to withstand many rounds of washing and also wear and tear from play and tumble, unless it is considered as special occasion wear.

Cotton

Cotton is traditionally considered one of the most environmentally friendly fabrics. Children’s jeans, t-shirts, dresses, and baby rompers from this fabric are perfect for any time of the year: they do not cause allergies, are durable enough and are highly chemical resistant. Babies and toddlers often have allergies or specific skin conditions which can be aggravated by rough or synthetic fabrics. Using organic cotton is a safe way to ensure that children will be comfortable, even if they have skin issues which are triggered by heavy dyes and chemicals. Cotton allows air to pass through it, and it can absorb and retain moisture. Nevertheless, it also has drawbacks, it can be difficult ironing clothes that are cotton-based. Clothes made out of cotton also tends to change shape in the washer. That is why a small amount of elastin or polyester is allowed in cotton items.

Satin

The satin fabric has a glossy surface and looks like silk. It is well-ventilated and easy to iron. Satin is suitable for children’s clothing.
